The IP rating is the abbreviation of the Ingress Protection rating. It classifies LED lights based on dust protection characteristics, foreign object intrusion prevention, waterproofing, and moisture resistance. It comes from the International Electrotechnical Commission's standard IEC 60529(https://www.iec.ch/ip-ratings); in this standard, the IP rating format for the protection of the electrical equipment housing against the intrusion of dust or liquids and uses a two-digit number, for example IP65. The first digit indicates the protection level against solid objects, and the second indicates the waterproof protection level.
IP Rating code
For the LED light IP rating, there are seven levels for solid protection, denoted by numbers 0-6, and nine levels for liquid protection, denoted by numbers 0-8. For specific protection levels, refer to the below chart.
The First Digit
First digit |
Solids Protection Level |
0 |
No protection |
1 |
Prevent entry of objects larger than 50mm. Prevent accidental contact with internal parts of the luminaire by humans. |
2 |
Prevent entry of objects larger than 12mm. Prevent fingers from touching internal parts of the luminaire. |
3 |
Prevent full entry of objects larger than 2.5mm. Prevent tools, wires, or objects with a diameter greater than 2.5mm from entering. |
4 |
Prevent the entry of objects larger than 1.0mm. Mosquitoes, flies insects, or objects with a diameter greater than 1.0mm should not be allowed to enter. |
5 |
Dust protection: This cannot completely prevent dust intrusion, but the dust entering will not affect the luminaire's regular operation. |
6 |
Dust tight: Completely prevent dust intrusion. |

Liquid Protection Level |
0 |
No protection |
1 |
Protection against vertically falling drops, which have no harmful effect. |
2 |
It protects against dripping water when tilted at an angle up to 15°, with no harmful effects from limited drops. |
3 |
Protection against rain, with no harmful effects from water falling at a limited angle. |
4 |
Protection against splashing water, with no harmful effects from water splashing in any direction. |
5 |
Protection against water jets, with no harmful effects from water jets in any direction. |
6 |
Water-resistant, with no harmful effects from powerful water jets. |
7 |
Submersion protection allows the luminaire to be immersed in water without harmful effects for a specified pressure and time. |
8 |
Deep submersion protection allows the luminaire to be immersed in water without harmful effects for a specified pressure and time. |

IP20 Protection Level
LED lights with an IP20 rating are suitable for dry, dust-free, and corrosive-gas-free indoor spaces.
IP44 Protection Level
LED lights with an IP44 rating are suitable for indoor spaces with moisture, corrosive gases, and outdoor covered areas.
IP65 Protection Level
LED lights with an IP65 rating are suitable for humid environments indoors and outdoors, such as open gardens and garages.
IP66 Protection Level
The LED lights with an IP66 rating have strong protective capabilities, can operate in harsh weather conditions, and can withstand powerful water jets and heavy dust. They are suitable for outdoor locations in extreme environments, such as coastal areas or high mountain zones.
IP67 Protection Level
LED lights with an IP67 rating can generally work under short-term water immersion and are suitable for places with high humidity and extremely high water vapour, such as swimming pools and steam rooms.
IP68 Protection Level
LED lights with an IP68 rating can be used generally under long-term water submersion and prevent dust from entering extreme situations, such as the seabed and ships.
Conclusion
Making waterproof LED lamps requires a multifaceted technical process involving material selection, sealing technology, protection ratings, installation and connection, and other auxiliary measures.
The IP rating of LED lights significantly impacts their selection and performance in different environments. Choosing LED lights with the appropriate IP rating ensures regular operation and can increase lifespan.
